"The islands were uninhabited when they were rediscovered by the Portuguese explorer Pedro Fernandes de Queirós, working in the employ of Spain, in January 1606. The British rediscovered the island on 3 July 1767 on a voyage led by Captain Philip Carteret, and named it after the fifteen-year-old Robert Pitcairn, a son of John Pitcairn, who was the crew member who first spotted the island; he was lost at sea three years later. Carteret, who sailed without the newly-invented marine chronometer, charted the island at 25°02'S 133°21'W, and although the latitude was reasonably accurate, his recorded longitude was incorrect by about 3° (330 km [210 mi]) west of the island. When the Bounty mutineers arrived on Pitcairn, it was uninhabited; however, a large number of archaeological items remained, such as marae, tiki carvings, adzes and adze flakes, rock carvings and petroglyphs. "Bangs' college summers were spent as a Colorado River guide in the Grand Canyon. After college, Bangs and some friends concocted a plan to run wild rivers in Ethiopia. In February 1973, he and his crew successfully ran the Awash River in Ethiopia. His identity as a river guide was solidified at that point. Bangs and his penniless friends figured they could finance a return trip or two by taking clients along. And so they did – on the Omo in Ethiopia – and Sobek Expeditions (co-founded with John Yost) was born, named in gratitude for the Egyptian crocodile god who may have spared their lives on those early first descents. Sobek became a river-running exploratory company via which Bangs and fellow guides racked up 35 first descents. Sobek Expeditions merged with Mountain Travel to become Mountain Travel Sobek in 1991. Bangs served as president of Outward Bound (2001–2002). " (from Wikipedia). Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket .

BOWLES, SAMUEL
Our New West Records of Trave between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean: Over the Plains - over the Mountains - Through the Great Interior Basin - over the Sierra Nevadas - to and Up and Down the Pacific Coast. . .
New York: Hartford Publishing Co, 1869. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. This book is in Good only condition and was likely issued without a dust jacket. Full calf leather binding. The front cover is nearly detached, but is still held on by the spine strings. The text pages are clean and bright. "Samuel Bowles III (February 9, 1826 – January 16, 1878) was an American journalist born in Springfield, Massachusetts. Beginning in 1844 he was the publisher and editor of the Springfield Republican, a position he held until his death in 1878...During his lifetime, and subsequently, the Republican office was a sort of school for young journalists, especially in the matter of pungency and conciseness of style, one of his maxims being "put it all in the first paragraph." In 1865, he made a journey to the Pacific coast with a large company, and in 1868 travelled as far as Colorado. In 1869, he again crossed the continent. He visited Europe in 1862, and again in 1870, 1871, and 1874; indeed, frequent trips were a necessity to him on account of ill health, his constitution having long since been impaired by over-work. Bowles published two books of travel, Across the Continent (1865) and The Switzerland of America (1869) , which were combined into one volume under the title Our New West (1869). His The Pacific Railroad Open, How to Go, What to See was a small collection of papers that originally appeared in the Atlantic Monthly (Boston, 1869)." (from Wikipedia). Good .

BOARD OF TOURIST INDUSTRY, Japan Pictorial
BOARD OF TOURIST INDUSTRY
Japan Pictorial
Tokyo, Japan: Board of Tourist Industry, 1937. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Paperback. B&W Illustrations; This is an oversized paperback book. The book is in Very Good- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The front cover of the book has noticeable ground-in dirt and rubbing. There is some beginning bumping and wear to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages ar generally clean and bright, though the title page has generalized spots of foxing. This book was produced by the Japanese Government Railways and Board of Tourist Industry, in anticipation of the 1940's Olympics, and before (or early on ) the The Second Sino-Japanese War. The text in the book includes descriptions in English, French, and German. "When the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out on July 7, 1937, Ichiro Kono, a member of the Imperial Diet (legislature) , immediately requested that the Olympics be forfeited. The 1938 Far Eastern Games were also canceled, but Japan's IOC delegates persisted under a belief that the war would soon be over. Amid the intensification of the war, the feasibility of both the Summer Olympics and the 1940 Winter Olympics grew increasingly questionable to other countries, who suggested a different site be chosen and spoke of the possibility of boycotting the Games were they to proceed in Japan. In March 1938, the Japanese provided reassurances to the IOC at the organization's Cairo conference that Tokyo would still be able to serve as the host city. However, many Diet members in Japan had already openly questioned hosting the Olympics in wartime, and the military was demanding that the organizers build the venues from wood because they needed metals for the war front. In July, a legislative session was held to decide the matters of the Summer and Winter Olympics and the planned 1940 World's Fair all at once. The World's Fair was only "postponed", under a belief that Japan would be able to wrap up the war, but the Olympics could not be moved and was canceled. " (from Wikipedia); Signed by Author.
